In the European Union legislation has been laid down to diminish the environmental burden of waste caused by end-of-life vehicles (vehicles in the waste stage), also abbreviated as ELV.
This legislation focuses on prevention, and also on collection and treatment of end-of-life vehicles. For exporters to the EU, particularly the requirements on prevention are relevant. These include measures to ensure that materials and components of vehicles put on the market after 1 July 2003 do not contain heavy metals such as lead, mercury, cadmium or hexavalent chromium. Please note that exemptions apply to this prohibition.
The following document provides an outline of the current EU legislation on end of life vehicles.
