The Rio Symposium was founded in 1988 with the idea of inviting renowned scientists from around the world to give the largest possible number of Latin American scientists and students a chance to participate in a high-level international conference. This idea has been extremely well received, and after the first two Symposia were organized in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, other Latin American scientists were offering to host the Rio Symposium in their countries. In the following years, Rio Symposia were successfully organized in Venezuela, Argentina, Mexico and Chile. During these years the conference, because of its high scientific level and its special character, also succeeded to attract an increasing number of  participants from outside of Latin America. In 2002, after a decade of traveling through Latin America, the Rio Symposium returned to Brazil, and was organized in Florianópolis  SC with a record number of participants and scientific contributions.

The Eighth Rio Symposium on Atomic Spectrometry will finally return to its origin, i.e. to Rio de Janeiro, and will carry on as much as possible the tradition of previous conferences. There will be invited lectures, oral and poster presentations. There will also be a Pre-symposium Course offered on Sunday, 01 August, and a Symposium Course in the late afternoon on three days during the week. As in the Seventh Rio Symposium, the conference language will be English.

If you are interested in the Eighth Rio Symposium on Atomic Spectrometry and want to receive the Second Circular with a preliminary program, registration and hotel reservation forms, please complete the attached Preliminary Registration Form and return it to the Organizers before 31st October 2003. If you plan to submit an oral or poster presentation, please also send a title and a brief description (short abstract) of the content of your work. More details and important dates are given below. Please also consult our web page, which will be periodically updated.

The beauty of the state of Rio de Janeiro, and the charm of your Brazilian hosts will inspire you during the Eighth Rio Symposium on Atomic Spectrometry. We invite you to present and discuss the results of your research with us, and also to enjoy the beauty of this privileged part of Brazil.
