The King's College Iron Metabolism IRG has evolved from the
long standing Centre for the Study of Metals in Biology and Medicine
and achieved GKT Medical School IRG status in 1999. The IRG has
important active links with the Royal Free Hospital and University
College Medical School.
The objectives of this Interdisciplinary Research Group (IRG)
is to define the genetic and environmental contributions to diseases
of iron metabolism and to develop novel therapies based on:
- characterization of genes and proteins responsible for cellular
iron trafficking and the control of proteins that oversee iron
movements and storage;
- genetic analysis of iron deficient and iron overloaded populations
and families;
- development of novel chelator-based drugs and methods for
studying labile intracellular and extracellular iron species.
- methods for studying labile intracellular and extracellular
iron species.
- Developments of treatment for iron deficiency anaemia.
