This session brings together scientists using multidisciplinary approaches to explore factors and processes controlling trace metal behavior in the environment. Specifically, we invite contributions on coupled microbiological and geochemical interactions affecting trace metal speciation, mobility, stability, microbial uptake and transformation in both natural and contaminated terrestrial, marine, and freshwater ecosystems.

Trace metals are important nutrients and contaminants in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Certain trace metals (e.g., Cu, Co, Fe, Mn, and Zn) serve as essential micronutrients and thus may exert a significant influence on processes that govern biogeochemical cycles of major elements including nitrogen and carbon. Conversely, other trace metals (e.g., Cr, Cd, Hg, As, Se, Sb, Sn, and U) can be harmful to ecosystem and human health as well as undergo abiotic and biotically-mediated transformations that alter their physicochemical properties and toxicity (e.g., biomethylation of Hg and biovolatilization of As).

Topics may include, but are not limited to, recent advances in biogeochemical transformations and transport of trace metals (e.g., redox reactions, sorption/desorption, and precipitation/dissolution), biochemical pathways and mechanisms (e.g., uptake, methylation, and demethylation), biomolecular and genetic research, remediation and treatment. Finally we encourage contributions relating to novel analytical tools, including modeling approaches from molecular to global scales, chromatography methods, isotope approaches, and synchrotron based techniques.
