The successful applicant will be responsible for research and administration contributing to a GCRF-funded project through MRC entitled “Cambridge Programme to Assist Bangladesh in Lifestyle and Environmental risk reduction” (CAPABLE). The project aims to better understand the how environmental and lifestyle factors influencing the health of rural, urban slum and urban population in Bangladesh. Research will be carried out at several institutions. The post at Aberdeen will particularly investigate the exposure of the people to arsenic and other toxic elements.

Job description
Main purpose of the role:
The successful applicant will be responsible for research and administration contributing to a GCRF funded project CAPABLE related to the exposure of Bangladeshi people to toxic elements

Key responsibilities:
Research Fellow
  • The development of speciation methods for inorganic arsenic in toenails, urine, foodcommodities and drinking water as and atmospheric particular matter using HPLCcoupled to ICP-MS and other field deployable methods.
  • Data collection and interpretation
  • Co-ordination of research with other institutions
  • Archiving of research materials
  • Preparation of research data for oral and written communication including publicationin scientific journals
  • Interaction with other partners within the CAPABLE consortium

Candidate background
The successful candidate should hold a PhD in an environmental science or analytical chemistry subject area and have an interest in epidemiology. You will also have the ability to interact with hospitals, epidemiological academic partners at Cambridge, UCL and a series of Bangladeshi institutions and NGOs.

Terms of appointment
Salary will be at the appropriate point on the Grade 6 salary scale (£33,199-£35,210 per annum) and negotiable with placement according to qualifications and experience. As this position is funded by the MRC it will be offered for a period of 2 years. Any appointment will be made subject to satisfactory references and a 12 month probation period.
