2020/02
Welcome to the February issue of EVISA's Speciation Newsletter !

Speciation analysis by using HPLC-ICP-MS very often is performed for determining the different species of a single element. The reason for such limitation is simple: conditions for sample preparation and separation for different element species cannot easily be optimised under a single set of parameters. In case that different elemental species have to be determined in the same sample, often different extraction and HPLC-ICP-MS methods have to be applied, making analysis time consuming and costly. Japanese researchers now have proposed a method for simultaneous determination of arsenic and mercury species in edible fish oil (see the news below).

Another type of pollutants entering the aquatic environment are cyclic volatile methyl siloxanes (cVMS), which are used besides many other applications in personal care products. To reduce emission to the environment, the use of octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4) and decamethylcyclopentasiloxane (D5) in wash-off cosmetic products in concentrations ≥0.1% by weight is prohibited in the EU since January 31, 2020 (EU Regulation 2018/35). German researchers now developed a method based on HPLC-ICP-MS/MS for the quantification of the cVMS D4, D5 and dodecamethylcyclohexasiloxane (D6) in German freshwater fish (see the news below). From their results for the last two decades, not only the most polluted rivers in Germany can be identified but also it can be concluded that the level of pollution is declining since the last 5-10 years.

The next important meetings, where scientists will discuss methods for speciation analysis will happen in the beginning of march. The 53rd annual conference of the DGMS will take place in Münster (Germany) and at the same time the 71th Pittsburgh Conference on Analytical Chemistry and Applied Spectroscopy will take place in Chicago (USA). For further information on events please consult EVISA's Diary of Events.
