2016/5
Welcome to the May issue of EVISA's Speciation Newsletter!

Last week the analytica 2016 in Munich attracted about 35.000 visitors, 40% of them came from abroad. More than 1200 exhibitors presented their products. With these numbers the analytica 2016 surpassed its record from 2014 by about 6.5 %.  Many exhibitors used the fair to introduce new products, some of which of interest for those being involved in trace element and speciation analysis (see the news below).

Last month, U.S. EPA confirmed that it is appropriate and necessary to regulate air toxics, including mercury, from power plants after including a consideration of costs.
The power industry and several states had challenged the rules in federal court (see the news below).

Again, the long list of naturally occurring arsenocompounds has to be extended.
Researchers from the University of Graz now have identified a new group of arsenolipids based on cell-membrane phosphatidylcholines in herring caviar (fish roe). With about 100 naturally occurring arsenocompounds identified we have stopped counting. Especially the evaluation of the toxicity of all of these organic arsenocompounds is a challenging task. An initial conclusion that the presence of most of these lipids in fish oils does not appear to raise toxicity problems when they are consumed  needs to be further investigated.
