Dear Subscriber !

Welcome to the August issue of EVISA's Speciation Newsletter.

Arsenic chemistry is very interesting and the number of arsenic compounds found in the biosphere is numerous. Using speciation analysis, scientists have mostly concentrated on water soluble compounds, but such search might produce a biased picture. Scientists from the University of Graz now have for the first time identified some Arsenolipids (see the News section).

It seems that arsenic chemistry even played a bigger role in earlier history of the earth, when atmospheric conditions were less pleasant. Scientists now found archaic bacteria that perform photosynthesis by using arsenic rather than oxygen.

The best way to be informed about new trends in speciation science is by direct contact with the scientists working in the field. The holiday season is nearly finished and conference activities are regaining. There are lots of interesting meetings coming up...

NEWS

EVISA is keeping you updated  with what is going on in speciation analysis. In this section you will find news about the most current research results, about trends, legal issues and informations from manufacturers in the field of speciation analysis.

With all the links to further information and publications the News archive is a valuable collection of "hot topics" in speciation analysis. We continuously update even former news with new links and information so that all news are actual all the time.

Arsenic-eating bacteria rewrite evolutionary history
Bacteria that photosynthesise using compounds of arsenic, rather than water, have been discovered in the warm, bubbling pools of Mono Lake in California.

Arsenolipids in Fish Oil
Arsenic, a hazardous metalloid, is found in more than 245 minerals and more than 25 different As compounds have been identified in biological samples. This high number of compounds was identified despite the fact that scientists have focused mostly on the water-soluble fraction. An international research group now found arsenic in lipids from fish oil. The discovery of arsenic in oil from capelin (Mallotus villosus), a North Atlantic fish in the smelt family, and the prospect that it could also be present in other fatty fish, could have important implications for human health and the ocean environment.

Experts detail how rice absorbs arsenic from the soil
Scientists in Japan may have discovered why rice absorbs so much arsenic from the soil, paving the way for fresh efforts to block the potentially harmful element from Asia's staple food.
