2008/07

Dear Subscriber !

Welcome to the July issue of EVISA's Speciation Newsletter.

There is good news for people in Bangladesh and West Bengal, who have been reeling under the problem of arsenic presence in rice. In a recent scientific achievement, researchers in Japan have found the cause of rice absorbing so much arsenic from the soil (see the News section).

There are only two weeks left in this month which is traditionally a holiday month with reduced activities with respect to international meetings before the conference season re-starts in August.

Speciation analysis often is performed by using hyphenated techniques in  which a sensitive (atomic spectrometric or mass spectrometric) detection system is coupled with a separation module (chromatography, electrophoresis etc.). A good opportunity to learn about the latest advances in separation science will be the ISC 2008 that will take place September 21-25 in Münster. The scientific program has just been posted but last minute posters can be submitted until July 31, 2008.  Two sessions of the  symposium will be dedicated to speciation analysis. You should not miss this important event !

Experts detail how rice absorbs arsenic from the soil
Scientists in Japan may have discovered why rice absorbs so much arsenic from the soil, paving the way for fresh efforts to block the potentially harmful element from Asia's staple food.

Methyl mercury metabolism in man influenced by genetic factors
A study published in the June issue of Environmental Health Perspectives indicates that some genes have variations influencing the metabolism of methylmercury. These genes control a compound in the body called glutathione. Glutathione binds to methylmercury and brings it to the liver, where it can be excreted with bile.
